There’s been a great response to our call for volunteer Town Ambassadors, with twelve volunteers now signed up. So from yesterday, Tuesday 1st September, pairs of volunteer Town Ambassadors will be out and about in the town centre to welcome residents and visitors and encourage spend in local shops and businesses and to provide reassurance to people who may be nervous about returning to the town. People who have, until recently, been shielding are only now beginning to venture back into the town and to have an Ambassador available who can offer advice and reassurance will no doubt be welcome.

Recognisable in their pink hi-viz vests with the i for information logo, the Town Ambassadors can be found either outside the Town Hall or walking about the town centre on a Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday from 10am – 4pm.

Arranged by Monmouthshire County Council, volunteers have been offered training on how to be a great Ambassador and have taken part in a town familiarisation walk. A wide range of information has been made available to enable them to provide advice and guidance. All the Ambassadors are local to Abergavenny so are well placed to be able to recommend places to shop and places to eat as well as advising on what’s open and the recent changes to the town to help social distancing and encourage people to visit and shop in the town.

Each ambassador has specific interests whether that is local history, walking, gardening etc so each one brings something different to the role. We hope that many will want to continue as volunteers in the Tourist Information Centre when this reopens in the near future so that visitors will continue to benefit from their personal knowledge and passion for the town.

Abergavenny Town Council is providing the day-to-day co-ordination and support of the Ambassadors with the Town Clerk being the contact point. The Town Ambassador programme is a joint initiative between Abergavenny Town Council, GAVO and Monmouthshire County Council and is operating in Abergavenny and Tintern only.
