Abergavenny Excels at Britain in Bloom Awards 2023

Abergavenny’s remarkable community effort in Britain in Bloom Awards 2023 has been rewarded with a prestigious Discretionary Award for Sustainable Gardening. The event, held on Monday, October 23, marked a historic moment for Abergavenny, as they made their inaugural appearance as finalists in this esteemed horticultural competition.

Representatives from a collection of community groups in Abergavenny travelled to London for the Britain in Bloom Awards ceremony, held at the renowned Lindley Hall in Westminster. Abergavenny faced stiff competition in the Town category, contending with five other towns.

As first-time participants in Britain in Bloom, Abergavenny’s achievement of the coveted Gold Award is a testament to the community’s dedication and hard work. While they may not have secured the top spot, the community is elated with their Gold Award win.

In addition to Abergavenny’s recognition, other Welsh communities showcased their excellence as well. Llandudno secured a Gold Award in the Coastal category, and Holt earned a Silver Gilt in the Large Village category.

Abergavenny’s commitment to sustainable gardening and environmentally friendly practices did not go unnoticed by the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) judges. The town was nominated for the Sustainable Gardening Award for their innovative use of smart technology and creative planting schemes. Their dedication to sustainability was rewarded with the Discretionary Award, surpassing not only other submissions in their category but also standing out as the best among all contenders.

Christine and Roy from Friends of Bailey Park are currently finding new homes for the lilies from Tudor Street, instead of disposing of them. They are repurposing the lilies and relocating them to Bailey Park.

The representatives from Abergavenny, Mariko, Paddy, Tony, Judith, and Sandra, were present at the awards ceremony to accept the accolades on behalf of the community. They humbly expressed their gratitude and honour for the recognition received. They are eagerly anticipating bringing these prestigious awards back to their beloved town and sharing the joy with the community.
