Abergavenny Town Council, in collaboration with Monmouthshire County Council, is excited to announce the launch of the Abergavenny Placemaking Plan. This initiative aims to ensure that any change, investment, or new development in Abergavenny contributes positively to enhancing the environments where we live, work, and play.
What is Placemaking?
Placemaking is a comprehensive approach to planning and development that focuses on creating vibrant, sustainable, and inclusive spaces. It ensures that any changes or investments made in the town centre not only meet immediate needs but also contribute to the long-term well-being of the community. For Abergavenny, this means considering the town centre in the broader context of North-West Monmouthshire.
What is a Town Centre Placemaking Plan?
Placemaking Plans are a requirement by the Welsh Government for local authorities seeking funding for town centre investments. These plans provide a strategic and coordinated approach that justifies funding and leverages additional resources from private and third sectors. The Abergavenny Placemaking Plan sets out the long-term vision for the town centre, ensuring its future development aligns with the needs and aspirations of the community.
To develop this comprehensive plan, Monmouthshire County Council and Abergavenny Town Council have appointed place-focused consultants Chris Jones Regeneration, Owen Davies Consulting, and Roberts Limbrick (architects and urban designers).
How Can I Get Involved?
Community involvement is crucial for the success of the Placemaking Plan. It is vital that the plan is based on a clear understanding of the place and its people, identifying opportunities for positive change and providing coordination for proposed projects and activities.
Mayor Chris Holland emphasised, “We want the Placemaking Plan to reflect the genuine needs and desires of our community. It’s about creating a space that everyone can be proud of and enjoy. Your input is invaluable in shaping the future of Abergavenny.”
Over the next six months, there will be numerous opportunities for local groups, organisations, businesses, and the community to get involved, including:
- Local Stakeholder Sessions: These will involve walkabouts and workshops to understand challenges and opportunities, and later to obtain feedback on emerging proposals.
- Community Consultation: This will include face-to-face events, online presentations, and feedback questionnaires.
Mayor Chris Holland added, “This is a unique opportunity for everyone to have a say in the future of our town centre. I encourage all residents to participate and share their insights.”
