As we approach the end of another eventful year, I am proud to reflect on the achievements and challenges that have shaped our town.
This year began with a significant milestone as Abergavenny Town Council was recognised by One Voice Wales for outstanding contributions to local governance and community initiatives. This honour underscores the incredible work being done to support our town and its residents.
One of the highlights of the year was the community dinner where we announced our Good Citizen Awards. It was a privilege to recognise some of the wonderful people whose contributions make Abergavenny a better place for all.
Throughout the year, a wide variety of events organised by community groups, charities, businesses, and the Town Council have made Abergavenny a vibrant destination for residents and tourists alike. Just a few examples include the Spring Food Fair, Writing Festival, 3 Peaks Walks, D-Day Celebrations, Arts Festival, Carnival, Pride, Sight Loss Cymru Event, Greener Abergavenny, Steam Rally, Remembrance Sunday, Christmas Light Switch-On, and the Christmas Markets.
We also celebrated retaining our Gold Status for Wales in Bloom, thanks to the incredible work of our volunteer groups, including Linda Vista Gardens, Friends of Castle Meadows, the Community Orchard, Friends of Bailey Park, the Women’s Institute, Our Lady St. Michael’s School, the Civic Society, Keep Abergavenny Tidy, and our local businesses. Hosting this year’s awards was a great privilege, and thanks to the Angel Hotel, the event was a resounding success. Looking ahead, we are thrilled to be submitting an award entry for Britain in Bloom in 2025. If you or your business would like to get involved, we’d love to hear from you.
This year has not been without its challenges. The fire on Frogmore Street in the heart of our business community was a difficult moment for many. However, the resilience and unity shown by residents and businesses in the aftermath have been truly inspiring. The Town Council remains committed to supporting those affected as we work together to rebuild and strengthen our town.
Other key achievements in 2024 include the successful rollout of our placemaking programme, the renewal of our Fair Trade agreement, and the introduction of 3D Virtual Tours for Abergavenny Town Hall building including; Library, Borough Theatre and Market facilities.
As the year draws to a close, I encourage everyone to support our local businesses. Whether you need fruit and veg, a plumber, a repair cafe, or a cake for a celebration, using local businesses strengthens our community.
If you or someone you know needs support, please contact the Town Council, and we’ll help signpost you to the right services.
To all residents, I look forward to seeing you at council meetings, volunteering groups, events, or out and about in our community.
Here’s to a hopeful and prosperous 2025 for Abergavenny.
