Abergavenny came out in force on Saturday afternoon to welcome BBC Radio 1 presenter Greg James and Parker the Red Nose mascot as part of Greg’s incredible Comic Relief fundraising challenge.
Greg is currently cycling 1,000km on a tandem to raise money for Comic Relief, travelling across the country and stopping in towns along the way to meet supporters and raise awareness.
After leaving Weymouth on Friday and cycling to Bristol, Greg made his way into Wales on Saturday via Blaenavon, before descending the Blorenge mountain and arriving in Abergavenny to an enthusiastic reception. Fans waving Welsh flags gathered along the route and hundreds of people lined the streets outside the Market Hall to cheer him on.
Greg was welcomed by Abergavenny Town Council Mayor, Councillor Philip Bowyer, before taking time to meet supporters, take photographs and thank those who had come out to show their support. Despite the long journey, Greg spent more than an hour greeting fans before heading off for a well-earned rest ahead of the next stage of his challenge.
Mayor Philip Bowyer said: “It was wonderful to see so many people come together in Abergavenny to support such an incredible fundraising challenge. Greg’s determination and the message behind Comic Relief that no one has to face life’s challenges alone, is something we are proud to support. The atmosphere in the town was fantastic and we wish him the very best for the rest of his journey.”
Greg continued his journey on Sunday, heading towards Birmingham, raising vital funds along the way to support Comic Relief’s work helping people facing poverty and hardship across the UK and around the world.
