Abergavenny Town Council’s Mayor, Cllr Philip Bowyer, was able to contribute £1000 from his community fundraising towards the project. The project was formally introduced during a whole school assembly on 27th April, where the Year 5 class shared their vision for the mural with fellow pupils and guests. The pupils presented their initial ideas and creative concepts, developed with the support of local artist Danielle Farrington, who will continue to guide the class through a series of workshops.
Originally requiring £1,680 to bring the mural to life, the project has now successfully reached its funding target thanks to the combined support of the local community. Alongside the Town Council’s contribution, £380 was generously provided by Abergavenny Civic Society, with additional funding helping to complete the total.
The initiative represents a valuable opportunity for community engagement and creativity, encouraging young people to explore their connection to Abergavenny’s heritage and identity through art.
The project also reflects the priorities of the current Mayor, Philip Bowyer, whose mayoral year has placed a strong emphasis on engaging with young people across the town.
Those in attendance at the assembly included Mayor Cllr Philip Bowyer, Principal Officer Sandra Rosser, Deputy Principal Officer Jay Shipley, Artist Danielle Farrington and Chair of Abergavenny Civic Society Tony Konieczny, all of whom were able to (see) experience first-hand the enthusiasm and creativity of the pupils involved.
Work on the mural will now progress through a series of artist-led workshops, giving pupils the opportunity to develop their ideas and contribute to a lasting piece of community artwork.
