Abergavenny Community Evening Celebrates Local Heroes and Community Spirit

Abergavenny Town Council hosted a highly successful Community Evening on 30 April at the King’s Arms, welcoming a strong turnout from across the town. The event provided an opportunity to highlight the outstanding work taking place locally, while recognising individuals and organisations who go above and beyond to support the community.

One of the highlights of the evening was the presentation of the Good Citizen Awards. This year’s recipients were Keep Abergavenny Tidy, along with Paul Cable, Janet Addis, Eric Davies, and Julian Edwards. Each was recognised for their valuable contributions to the town, from environmental efforts to individual acts of dedication that help make Abergavenny a better place for all.

The evening also marked the signing of several three-year agreements between the Town Council and key community organisations. These agreements, including both renewals and new partnerships, reaffirm the Council’s commitment to supporting valuable local initiatives. Organisations recognised included Tythe Barn Wellbeing Café, Gunter Mansion, Friends of Bailey Park, and Friends of Castle Meadows, all of which play an important role in enhancing wellbeing, heritage, and green spaces within Abergavenny.

In addition, the Mayor presented £1,000 donations to each of his chosen charities for the year: St John Ambulance, Borough Band, and Abergavenny Netball Team. Each organisation reflects the Mayor’s focus on engaging young people across the community, whether through physical activity, education, or creative opportunities.

The evening also acknowledged Abergavenny’s involvement with Mayors for Peace, an international organisation founded by Takeshi Araki in 1982. Today, under the leadership of Kazumi Matsui, the organisation continues to promote peace and work towards a world free from nuclear weapons.

The Community Evening was a celebration of collaboration, dedication, and community spirit, highlighting the strength of Abergavenny and the people who make it such a special place to live.
